Have you just graduated? Don’t know how to set your first steps in the business world? Consider a job in sales. I am convinced that it’s the best you can do.
Let’s be honest. When you have finished your Bachelor or University Degree, starting a job in Sales might be not the first job you have thought of. You think that’s better that you can tell your parents or friends that you have chosen to start a safe career in a finance, consultancy or marketing role. While this might be a safe choice, it’s definitely not the best choice.
If there’s a job that can drive your career to great heights, it’s a job in Sales. Here are the reasons why.
You will step out of your comfort zone
If there’s a job where you constantly need to step out of your comfort zone, it’s a sales job. Every day you meet new people, you must embrace new challenges and you need to think differently. The best salespeople never do their job routinely.
You will be able to connect with a lot of new people
Your career does not depend on what you know, but who you know. A sales job will give you a tremendous opportunity to connect with new people. And the more people you know, the stronger your network will become and the better your career goes.
You will see how other companies work
As a sales rep, especially in B2B of course, you will have the opportunity to have a look into the kitchen of all type of companies. You will learn how they work, what their challenges are, how their internal politics work, and what distinguishes the great companies from the mediocre ones. A job in Sales can be the best MBA you will ever have.
You will make a lot more money than in an average job
Good salespeople make a lot of money. And that’s not for nothing. Good salespeople directly contribute to their employer’s bottom-line, and employers pay for that. The best salespeople often make more money than directors or managers in the space of, let’s say marketing or finance. If you start in sales, you will soon see yourself making more money than your college friends that have started an average job.

You will be intellectually challenged
Don’t think that a sales job is easy. It’s one of the toughest jobs. Only the smart ones will survive and grow in the league of multi-million-dollar deals. Making large deals requires a high IQ and EQ.
You are prepared for entrepreneurship
Look at the successful entrepreneurs around you. You will see that most of them started a career in sales. That’s not strange. The best salespeople are real entrepreneurs; they are persistent, creative, authentic and reliable. They take responsibility for their success and never blame others. And above all; their passion is contagious.
You will learn how to deal with resistance
When you start in sales, be prepared to get more ‘no’s’ than in every other job. A sales job prepares you for real life; that success doesn’t come overnight. Persistence is key. Every ‘NO’ you will receive will bring you closer to your end goals.
It’s fun!
Last but not least: Sales is fun. There’s no job that is more dynamic and varied than sales. You meet new people, you will help companies, you will be pushed out of your comfort zone and you will sign great new deals. So where are you waiting for?
